WordPress 2.0 Upgrade Complete

WordPressBack in December I posted that WordPress just release version 2.0. Since this version contains a major overhaul to the backend I postponed the upgrade. Well version 2.0.2 was release last week so I felt it was finally time to do the upgrade.

I was concerned with the amount of work I would need to do to fix plugins and themes to get this working with the new version. As it turned out these concerns seem to be unfounded. I was able to upgrade very easily. Only a couple of plugins needed upgrading. One I wrote used the first and last names in the users table, and these fields have been replaced with a display name field. I use the PHPExec plugin and although the author did not supply a new version, Muhammad Zamroni supplies a patched version. All other plugins and this theme seem to work fine.

All steps including:

  • Backups
  • Testing the backups
  • Upgrading my QA server
  • Testing on my QA server
  • Fixing the few issues
  • Deploying / Upgrading the production site

only took 2 hours. Needless to say I was pleasently suprised.

With the additional add-ons in this release and the many bug fixes I wish I had done the upgrade sooner.
