Tragedy
When a tragedy occurs you often realize how fortunate you are in your circumstance compared to those to whom the tragedy occurred. A co-worker and friend of mine lost his wife during child birth this week and it certainly drove home how lucky Jeaniene and I are, and that any troubles we think we have are minor in the large scheme of things.
HERNANDEZ-WRIGHT _ Maria passed away unexpectedly May 16, 2005 during childbirth at BC Women and Children’s Hospital. She is survived by her loving husband and soul mate of sixteen years, Stephen (Wright); her beautiful newborn son, Nathan Gene Wright and her close loving family; parents Eugene and Annette, sisters Janice and Annabel, grandparents Juan and Nati, uncles, aunts and cousins. Though her life was cut short at the young age of 32, she touched the lives of many. Those who knew her will remember her for her strength, independent nature, generosity, deep love for her family and lifelong hopes for a family of her own. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Andrews Church, 480 E.47th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. Interment will follow at Ocean View Burial Park. Prayers will be held in the Church on Monday, May 23, 2005, at 7:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to a Visitation to be held at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, B.C. on Saturday, May 21, 2005, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Maria, your memory will remain in our hearts forever and your spirit will live on in the gift of life you have given. With your guidance from up above, Steve and your family will watch over your precious baby. Take comfort that your child will come to know you and love you as much we do. We have cherished having you in our lives. You will always be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, friend, wife and mother. We miss you dearly. May you rest in eternal peace. In lieu of flowers, information for donations will be available at the Service.
Steve who advised that the baby - “Nathan” has survived and that Maria’s family will be assisting him to care for Nathan.
An update as to what happened: Maria died of an Amniotic Fluid Embolism. Rare, but fatal in almost 80% of the cases.

Thank you for posting Maria’s obituary. There is an organization in California that is working to prevent this type of maternal death. I think it would be important for Steve to know about them. They are at

The family that started this organization had a daughter who died with her child of an embolism.
I would like to offer support for the family, too, if that is appropriate.

[…] A month ago I wrote about the death of a co-workers wife. Recently I found out the cause of death was from an Amniotic fluid embolism. The following is taken from the eMedicine online medical database: […]
