Ek Bbalam

Ek Balam (or “Black Jaguar” in Maya) has a spectacular temple/tomb on the fourth level of “The Acropolis” or “La Torre”. Because this temple was covered over with a fill of rubble and limestone soon after its construction, the temple and its stucco decorations were protected from the elements and preserved intact.

Mexico December 2003

In December of 2003 Jeaniene and Rodney went to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and visited various Mayan archeological sites and Spanish colonial architecture. The Yucatan Peninsula is located in the South East portion of Mexico and the trip started with a flight to Cancun. Although several Spanish cathedrals, town squares and museums were visited […]

Labna

“The next morning we set out for the ruins of Labna. Our road lay southeast, among hills, and was more picturesque than any we had seen in the country. At the distance of a mile and a half we reached a field of ruins, which, after all we had seen, created in us new feelings […]

Acropolis Stuccos 1

The fourth level of the Acropolis, referred to as the “White Temple”, contains the tomb of an Ek Balam king named Ukit Kan Le’k Tok’. The stucco-work on its facade is in such astonishingly good condition that it appears to have been completed only yesterday. This is because the temple was covered over with rubble […]

Tree on Car 2003

Just prior to Christmas we bought a new 2003 Honda Civic. After waking up New Years Day while visiting Bruce in Wistler we found a tree had fallen down covering out car. Luckly for us the tree’s weight was held mostly by Neil’s Bronco.

Sayil

Sayil means place of the leaf-cutter ants in Maya.
Stephens and Catherwood visited “Zayi” during their 1841 expedition to the Yucatan. Stephens wrote: “After proceeding a mile and a half we saw at some distance before us a great tree-covered mound, which astonished us by its vast dimensions…
Our guides cut a path, and, clearing the branches […]

Kabah

“The region behind or south of the two converging ranges of low hills that come together just northwest of Uxmal is called the Puuc (Maya hilly country). During the eleventh and twelfth centuries, this section of Yucatan supported the densest population in the entire northern half of the Peninsula, a population which was gathered around […]
